Chapter Ten

Bianca

I pat the dog’s head and laugh. I like dogs but don’t care for their kisses. Jack tugs at the dog’s collar, so that she jumps off the couch.

“Bye, Brownie.” I stroke her black tail as she hops down.

“No, that’s Chocolate.” He nods toward the kitchen. “Brownie is in there.”

I scrunch my forehead. “So Chocolate is not the chocolate lab?”

“No.”

“Huh.” Yet more proof that he isn’t skilled at handing out pet names.

He smirks. “Come on. I need to get back to the lodge. The guys are probably ready to hunt.”

We step onto the porch, and he shuts the squeaky screen door behind us. I now understand why he built the lodge. This cabin works fine for a single man, but it doesn’t give off rustic retreat vibes like the lodge.

I stare at my milk-soiled pullover as we drive the short distance to the lodge. I half-regret not buying one of those dowdy unisex coats at the coffin place. It would’ve been a smart investment, considering what I’ll have to spend on dry cleaning once I get home.

Home. I suck in a deep breath. Thanks to Jack’s help, I’ve learned to relate to Macon and Ronald and drawn a solid business plan to please them. Also thanks to Jack, I’ve developed feelings I forgot existed.

But tomorrow I’ll leave all this behind: the outdoors, Alabama, and Jack.

I admire his profile. Why can’t a guy this handsome and caring and skilled live in Atlanta? Saying goodbye won’t be easy. Maybe I can tie him up with that chain hanging in his metal building to kidnap him. Of course, kidnapping is hard to do when your only transportation is a ride-share.

We park by the back porch, where Ronald and Macon sit talking.

“Deer feeders are all stocked, and cameras are loaded.” Jack hops out of the vehicle and shoves his hands in his pockets. “And Bianca bottle-fed Freckles.”

The corners of my lips lift with pride. Aside from pet-sitting a friend’s Maltipoo in college, I’ve never helped take care of an animal before.

“Who’s Freckles?” Macon moves his eyes between Jack and me.

“Binaca named the deer.” The tone of Jack’s voice lets me know he still doesn’t think giving Freckles a name was necessary.

“Speaking of freckles, I need to go change.” I grimace at the flecks of milk soaked into my fleece.

“Why don’t you go hunting with us?” Ronald calls from behind as I start toward the house.

I halt and turn my head. “I’m wearing perfume and makeup.”

Ronald shrugs. “We’re in no hurry.”

I muster a slight smile. “Give me thirty minutes?”

The men nod in unison, then continue talking. I go inside and make my way up the towering stairs to my room. I still have the scentless shampoo and soap, compliments of Jack’s stash.

I lock the bedroom door behind me and begin to undress. A sour milk smell drifts to my nostrils as I pull the fleece over my head. Gross. I toss it aside with my other garments that need a good cleaning.

Time to de-scent myself once again.
